Leicester medicine entry requirements

Leicester is the most transparent medical school in the UK: it publishes its full scoring system and its interview cut-off, every year. Selection is a straight 50:50 of GCSEs and UCAT, out of 96 — predicted A-levels are only a gate. Strong GCSEs with a decent UCAT? Few schools are this predictable.

The requirements

A-level offerA*AA including Chemistry or Biology plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology — from 2027 the A* can be in any of the three. Predicted AAB minimum to be ranked (ABB AccessLeicester).
GCSEsGrade 6/B in English Language, Maths and two sciences minimum — and your best 8 GCSEs are scored as half the selection score.
UCATScored /48 as the other half. SJT Band 4 is an automatic reject; the bottom two deciles are not considered.
ResitsA-level resits are not considered (mitigation via Leicester’s panel is the only exception). GCSE Eng/Maths resits meet the minimum but the FIRST-SIT grade is what scores.
Personal statementNot scored at any stage.
Places293 for 2027 (275 Home, 18 Overseas); the A199 Foundation Year has 38 places separately.

How Leicester actually scores you

Published in full — rare honesty. The pre-interview score is GCSE /48 + UCAT /48 = /96. Your best 8 GCSEs (English Language, Maths, Chemistry, Biology plus your best four others) score 9=6, 8=5, 7=4, 6=3 — and a grade 5 or below scores nothing. UCAT: over 2400 = 48, then one point lower per 50-mark band.

HalfMaxHow it scores
GCSE academic48best 8 (Eng, Maths, Chem, Bio + best 4): 9=6, 8=5, 7=4, 6=3, 5 or below = 0; first-sit grades
UCAT48over 2400 = 48, then −1 per 50-mark band; bottom 2 deciles not considered
Total9650:50 academic + UCAT

Published grid (2026, /96). Predicted A-levels are a gate (AAB), not scored. Achieved applicants add an A* bonus (A*A*A = +1, A*A*A* = +2; one step higher with an EPQ / AS / Welsh Bacc at B).

The published interview line

Leicester publishes the minimum score guaranteed an interview, every year. For 2026 entry, home predicted-grade applicants needed 79/96:

Group2026 line (published)
Home, predicted A-levels79
Home, achieved A-levelstop-5-decile auto, else 86
Overseas, predicted88
Home graduate68 (pred) / 70 (ach)
Prior scale (home predicted)52.5/64 (2024) · 53/64 (2025)

Leicester-published; shifts yearly with the pool. 2026 is the first year on the /96 scale (UCAT rescaled to /2700). Borderline candidates below the line are sometimes still interviewed.

The resit trap costs a UCAS choice

An A-level resit makes you ineligible at Leicester (no standard exceptions). And GCSE resits only meet the minimum — the score uses your first-sit grade, so a Maths resit from 5 to 8 still scores 0 of 6. If your GCSE set leans on resits, Leicester’s 50:50 maths works against you.

Knowing the line is one thing; knowing whether your GCSE set + UCAT clears it — and what’s safe in any year as the line drifts — is what we model:

Interview and offers

The interview is an MMI plus a numeracy station, scored out of 105 — and the offer is decided on the interview alone: your pre-interview score does not carry forward. Interview to offer ran at about 55% overall for 2025 entry (home predicted 58%, achieved 64%). Leicester interviews around 1,600 a year and over-offers roughly 3x against ~293 places.

Contextual route: AccessLeicester (predicted ABB), Realising Opportunities / Sutton Trust (AAB) and eligible IMD-quintile-1 applicants are guaranteed an interview with a UCAT in the top 7 deciles (SJT 1-3), and receive a lowered AAA offer.

Leicester medicine FAQs

What GCSEs do I need for Leicester medicine?

Grade 6/B in English Language, Maths and two sciences as a minimum — but GCSEs are half your entire pre-interview score. Your best 8 (the four mandatory subjects plus your best four others) score 9=6, 8=5, 7=4, 6=3 out of 48, and a grade 5 or below scores zero. Leicester is a strong-GCSE play.

What UCAT score do I need for Leicester?

It depends on your GCSEs, because the system is a literal 50:50. UCAT scores /48 (over 2400 = 48, one point lower per 50 marks) and the 2026 guaranteed-interview line was 79/96 for home predicted applicants. With near-maxed GCSEs you need a UCAT in the high 1900s or above; weaker GCSEs need a higher UCAT to compensate. The bottom two deciles are not considered.

Do predicted A-level grades matter at Leicester?

Only as a gate: you must be predicted at least AAB (ABB for AccessLeicester), but predictions are not scored. The pre-interview rank is GCSE + UCAT only, and the standard offer is A*AA including Chemistry or Biology plus a second science-list subject.

Does Leicester accept resits?

A-level resits make you ineligible unless you held a conditional firm offer from Leicester with accepted mitigation. GCSE English and Maths resits are accepted to meet the minimum, but the score uses your FIRST-SIT grade — a Maths resit from 5 to 8 still scores 0.

Is the UCAT SJT used at Leicester?

Band 4 is an automatic pre-interview reject. Bands 1-3 carry no penalty and the SJT is not otherwise scored. The personal statement is not scored either — selection is the published points score, then the MMI.
