UCL medicine entry requirements

UCL shortlists on your total UCAT score alone — GCSEs and A-levels above the minimum do not score — and, unusually, it publishes the lowest score invited each year. Clear the line and the offer rests entirely on the MMI, where home applicants convert at roughly two in three.

The requirements

A-level offerA*AA with A*A in Chemistry and Biology (either order), three A-levels sat together. Access UCL contextual offer: AAB with AA in Chemistry and Biology.
GCSEsGrade 6/B in English Language and Maths — the only GCSE requirement. Wider GCSEs are not scored.
UCATThe entire shortlist decision: ranked by total score. The SJT only breaks ties between equal totals.
ResitsA-level resits not accepted — including restarting Year 12. GCSE resits to meet the minimum are fine.
Personal statementNot read or scored at any stage (UCL FOI).
Places334 in total (about 310 Home, 24 Overseas) for typically 3,000+ applicants. 6-year MBBS with an integrated BSc year.

How UCL actually scores you

UCL switched from the BMAT to the UCAT for 2025 entry. Eligible applicants are ranked by total UCAT and the top scorers are interviewed. UCL publishes the lowest score invited each year:

Entry yearAccess UCLHomeOverseasScale
2025 (first UCAT year)~1930~2080~2280/2700 rebased
2026 (latest)208021902300/2700

UCL-published figures (Selection Procedure page, confirmed by FOI) — the LOWEST invited, not a guaranteed cut-off. 2025 entry was sat on the old /3600 scale (Home 2800) and is rebased here by percentile. The line ROSE from ~2080 to 2190 as the pool strengthened.

Resitting? UCL is a wasted choice

A-level resits are not accepted — and that includes re-starting Year 12. Whatever your UCAT, a resit application here fails the eligibility screen. Several schools accept resits without penalty; spend the choice there instead.

So is your UCAT actually enough?

2190 was last year’s floor, and it has risen year on year. Whether your score survives this year’s drift — and whether UCL is the right one of the four UCAS lines for your exact profile — is what we model:

Interview and offers

The interview is an MMI of up to eight five-minute stations (home applicants in person at Bloomsbury). Offers are made on interview performance alone — UCL’s FOI answer is explicit: “Only interview scores are used to make offers.” In 2025 entry about 69% of Home interviewees (594 of 862) and 42% of Overseas received an offer.

2025 (UCAT)Home149686259469%
2025 (UCAT)Overseas6711446142%

UCL FOI responses (Oct 2024 and Oct 2025). Home application-to-interview rose to about 58% in the first UCAT year.

Contextual route: Access UCL (Home only — UK state school plus a postcode flag or Free School Meals) lowers both the grades (AAB, AA in Chemistry and Biology) and the UCAT line (2080 vs 2190). Not a guaranteed-offer scheme, but the single biggest lever if you qualify.

UCL medicine FAQs

What UCAT score do I need for UCL medicine?

UCL publishes the lowest total score it invited to interview. For 2026 entry that was 2190/2700 for Home applicants, 2080 for Access UCL (contextual) and 2300 for Overseas. Those are the lowest invited, not a guaranteed cut-off — UCL warns the line moves yearly, and it rose from 2025 to 2026, so aim clearly above the latest figure.

What A-level grades does UCL require?

A*AA with A* and A in Chemistry and Biology (either order), all three studied at the same time and sat together. The third subject is your choice (not General Studies or Critical Thinking). Predictions above the minimum give no advantage — shortlisting is on UCAT alone.

Do GCSEs matter for UCL medicine?

Only grade 6/B in English Language and Maths. UCL does not score or rank your wider GCSE profile — a wall of 9s gives no advantage over the minimum.

Does UCL accept A-level resits?

No — A-level resits are not accepted, and that includes re-starting Year 12. The only exception is graduate applicants who re-sat before their first degree. GCSE resits to meet the English and Maths requirement are accepted.

Is the UCAT SJT used at UCL?

Only to break ties between applicants on the same total UCAT score. It is not a cut-off and is not scored into the ranking. The personal statement is not read or scored at any stage (confirmed by FOI).
